 Dining in Varkala

The only fancy restaurant available at Papanasam/Varkala is in the Taj Garden Retreat. Almost all hotels and resorts have room service. There are lots of restaurants at the cliff. Most of them and places-to-eat in the cliff are seasonal and spring up during the tourist season (beginning in late November). Try the fresh fish or seafood from any number of the cliff-top restaurants. Seafood is caught by local fishermen and displayed in front of many restaurants. Select your food, have it prepared in the tandoor and enjoy the sunset while you dine.

The Funky Art Cafe is easily the most happening place in Varkala, what with daily live music shows and great ambience,it definitely is the cafe to watch out for. Watch out for the staff distributing pamphlets for regular parties at the cafe. Also try Bhang Lassi which can be ordered only from the kitchen for Rs 150-200. Definitely worth going for to make the Varkala experience consummate

Little Tibet serves amazing tibetan food. Try the momos (tibetan dumplings, served with a soup to sip in) and the Chapati Roll, veg coast Rs 80 and Rs 90. Another must is the fresh pineapple/grape juice. Plus the most generous fruit salad.

Varkala Shopping is an experience that will fascinate the traveler. There is no shortage of souvenirs to buy, both unique and the not so unique. Wherever one looks there are shops and open air markets to be strolled through and enjoyed. Varkala shopping is anything but boring. With lively entertainment and the excitement of bazaars and small shops, Varkala shopping couldn't be more fun and exciting.

Beach Bazaars
From the time the shops on the beach open for business in the morning until they close late in the evening, the beach bazaars are a great place to shop. Interesting items include artifacts and those made of coir or carved horns. The entire state of Kerala is well-known for beautifully and masterfully carved horns. The beach bazaars are definitely the place to find shopping adventures and delightful entertainment.

Seaside Cliffs
Seaside Cliffs not only provide food and drink but little shops as well. Aimed more to the tourist, prices in cliff shops may be slightly higher than on the beach. The visitor can find unique Indian crafts, clothing and much more in these little shops that are located among the restaurants and bars along the cliffs. While shopping, enjoy the view, a brew and some good Indian cuisine. Look for great deals on spices and coffee, and crawl around the bookstalls for some great reading material.

Khadi Store
Khadi Store is jewel of a store that has clothing, hair oils, cooking oils, food, leather goods and honey. If the visitor is looking for some great Khadi wear this is the place to find it. The traveler can do a little grocery shopping as well for a picnic at the beach.

Tibetan Shops
Don't over look these special shops. The visitor can find traditional jewelry and ornaments as well as local attire. "Shop ‘til you drop" and find treasures that are worth taking home to friends and families or treasures that are just great decorations for your home. In these little shops one can find great items from Rajasthan and Kashmir.

Brand names are not in abundance in Varkala. Some bargaining is allowed and it really is up to the individual. Don't be afraid to haggle over prices for local handicrafts and other products. Language can be a barrier, so use sign language or other methods of communication to help with the bargaining process.
