The Kappil beach sprawls across 25 acres of land, and even beyond that. It is one of the hot weekend getaways, famous for confluence point of lake and sea, which is very much visible to in the water there. Kappil Beach is a picturesque destination, cocooned away some 6 km from Varkala, with other-worldly serenity and nature’s best. Aqua activities such as swimming and water sports can be enjoyed here. Sun-bathing makes up the paramount activity here. Further 6 km is located Bekal Fort that can be traversed by auto rickshaw. Kodi Cliff and Dolphins are an added attraction on the Kappil Beach. A quick and hot getaway, Kappil beach is an excellent visit.


Kollam (Quilon) Beach (20 Km)

Located on the banks of Asthamudi Lake, the beach at Kollam is highly recommended getaway from Varkala. Offering an array of full time beach activities, it is mostly known for its Cashew Industry. A port city and one time active harbour for Chinese ships and trade, it is home to Chinese fishing nets, huge Chinese Water Pots, blue and white porcelain and sampan-like boats even visible today. Backwater and long canal waterways are the speciality of this beach. Ferry services from here to Alleppey are an inviting chance to cruise in the snake boats and water boats.


Kovalam (50 Km)

Entertainment and beauty coalesced into one; Kovalam is an enrapturing treat to eyes. A popular beach embellished with the sobriquet-Paradise of South- it is famed for its coconut groves, studding the whole of beach expanse with its dense wood lets. Kovalam, a crescent shaped beach has three parts: Light House, Samudra and Hawah. Boat jetties to sunbathing to backwater to fishing hamlets to different kinds of water sports have transformed Kovalam into a hub of tourists. Huge patches of coral reefs, white sand bed and blue hues of water form enrapturing scenery in Kovalam. Preferably, spending a quiet evening, watching the setting sun, is best activity to do in Kovalam. And to top it all, the sea-side culinary delights every passer by. Kovalam is also a fabulous place for binging on excellent food like lobster, prawns, delicious fish curry South- Indian flavour) and what not!!!


Thiruvananthpuram or Trivandrum (46 Km)

Thiruvananthapuram is a mouthful moniker given to Kerala`s quayside state capital, but thankfully everyone calls it by the name of Trivandrum. Trivandrum is the main entry point to Kerala is Trivandrum, or what is called Thiruvananthpuram. It is the abode of the sacred snake Ananda on which Lord Vishnu, the Preserver, reclines. To add to it is also the nearest airport and a prominent rail section to Varkala.

Thiruvananthpuram has every distinction of qualifying a historical city. Right from interesting museums and all important temples, revering the Gods and Goddesses, Trivandrum is of great significance to Hindus. A composite cosmopolitan city, Thiruvananthpuram has fair share of attractions enwrapped in the form of temples, zoos and museum complexes.

Being a sea-side capital of Kerala, beaches are an obvious and commonly sought after attractions here. It is a must visit for all. Let alone stand the attractions, Trivandrum`s boasts of excellent transport network of wide roads, buses and trains too.

Thiruvananthpuram is Kerala`s state capital is immediately attractive with an impressive temple, delightful museum and a nearby beach and royal palace. It is also one of the loveliest capital cities in India, small, green and clean. Sri Anandapadmanabhavaswami Temple, The fort,  Malika Palace, The Secretariat, The Public Park and art Galleries are some of the chosen place to ramble around in the city.


Poovar Islands (River of flowers)

Poovar is a tiny fisherman’s boondock tucked in quietude of Thiruvananthpuram. Embraced by enticing beach on one side and backwater on other, Poovar is a newly emerged tourist destination without any large crowd. Dominated by water routes, canals and estuaries, deltas and interspersing of 43 rivers into Arabian Sea, Poovar Islands has had the honour of being a high-flying trading centre during the British Raj. Backwater lagoon is a wonder striking gift to the place. Many people get a bagful of sand from there. It is just 15-min-ride to Poovar from Thiruvananthpuram.


Vizhinzam

Botanical Garden is one of the best tourist attraction places which attract the tourist from all over the world. This garden was laid out in 1847 by the Marquis of Tweedale and is spread over 22 hectares ascending the slopes on the hill at an elevation of 2,400 meters above Main Sea Level. An explicit collection of flowering tress, beautiful shrubs, and rare colored lilies are seen.

Flourishing green well maintained lawns, rare trees species a 20 million year old fossil tree, a monkey's puzzle tree – monkeys can't climb this tree, an Italian - style garden bordering, a immense variety of flowering bushes, flowers, and plants , fern house with a vast range ferns and orchids, a clear pool are some of the highlights of this garden. . Not surprisingly, it's a favorite destination for students who specialize in plant science.


Ochira

Located on the border of Alleppey and Kollam district, Ochira is the best known for its Parambrahmam Temple which spreads spaciously on 36 acres of huge land. Apart from the rustic scenery, the temple is renowned for its belief of one god and one place. An unusual temple of its kind, Ochira Temple has no idol and priest in the temple confines. Structurally, the temple boasts of not-so-regular architecture and varies vastly from other temple site. Best time to visit the temple is during the Ochira Kali festival where one can get to see mock fights as well as physical skills of the participants.


Ponmudi Hill Station

A picture-pretty hill station in Thiruvananthpuram district of Kerala, Ponmudi is linked by narrow winding offering scenic view on all sides. Lying in the southern Cardamom Hills, it is the only hill station of note near Thiruvananthapuram. The Hill range is altogether more interesting; it offers not just a day's excursion in the state, rather whole holiday out in the open. With mod cons available, the way has become easier. Ponmudi is not the easiest stretch to travel in but offers visitors an enjoyable experience altogether. The road that follows east from Kottayam to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, about 120 km, is unequalled in every sense.
Drive your way winding up the mountain, climbing through steep slopes carpeted with tea bushes, rubber trees and verdant gardens of Coffee, cardamom and pepper. Peermade is a pretty place to rest during the drive. Hereafter, you are on the highest peak of Cardamom Hills.
Famous places here include Golden Valley, tea-gardens and Agasthyarkoodam, highest peak in the Western Ghats and in the district too. Trekking and hiking can be enjoyed here too.


Veli Lagoon

Veli Lagoon is located 8 km from Thiruvananthpuram district of Kerala. It is located at the conflux of Veli Lake and Arabian Sea and is flanked by two scenic hill hocks on each side. It is a pretty picnic place provided with the facilities of water sports, swimming, floating restaurants, amusement parks and boating (pedal boat).


Neyyar and Wildlife

Neyyar wildlife sanctuary lies on the fringes, around 22 km of Thiruvananthpuram. Neyyar Dam is a panoramic dam and just above it is located a wildlife Sanctuary covering a total of 128 km area. Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Kerala, India, running parallel southeastern side of the Western Ghats. Enriched with tropical wet evergreens to grasslands, Neyyar Wildlife Park records of many species in fauna and flora. The Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is a part of Neyyar Reservoir located 32 km from the state capital of Thiruvananthpuram.

Attractions
Elephants, Sloth Bears, Nilgiri Tahrs, Gaur, Sambars, Barking Deer, Indian Porcupines, Malabar Squirrels, Tigers, Lion-tailed Macaques, jungle cats, Wild Boars and Nilgiri Langurs and many varieties of snake constitute the specialty of the place. Crocodile Farm and lion Safari are the two most prominent places here. Boating is the main draw of the place. Besides, Agasthyakoodam Peak (1890 mt) shares a fair amount of attraction. Neyyar is also quiet high on the score of reptilian species such as cobras, vipers, pythons, rat snakes, flying snakes and lizards, which can be frequently spotted in the park premises. A range of avifauna species too punctuate the park areas. King fishers, white-breasted water hen, little green heron, woodpeckers, Indian cuckoos, gray jungle fowl, common mynas, Indian hill mynas, darters, little cormorants, little egrets and brahminy kites can be oft-spotted at the Neyyar wildlife sanctuary.

Best time to visit
Winters, October through March, brings in best time to visit the wildlife Sanctuary. During the winters an unexpected numbers of birds, local and migratory birds, dot the wildlife park.


Arruvikara Dam (16 Km)

Aruvikkara Dam is located on the outskirts of Thiruvananthpuram, near Kollam city (23 km). A pictorial dam, Arruvikara Dam is hottest hunt of tourists in Arruvikara near Thiruvananthpuram. The scenic locale is sanctified by Durga Devi Temple which rests in close proximity of the dam.
